Studio vs. Lifestyle for Newborn Photography

Hey there! Let’s take a minute to chat about the differences between studio and lifestyle photography. I’m a studio photographer, and I chose to do studio photography for some very specific reasons. Lifestyle photography has a place for a lot of families, but like anything there are a few drawbacks. So let’s take a moment to dive into the pros and cons, so that you can better decide what sort of session is right for you and your family.

Part of my preference for doing studio photography is based on the level of control I am able to achieve as a photographer. Not just the control I have over the images I create, but the experience I am able to provide for the families that come through my door. I am able to ensure that everything's set up just right for both you and your baby, and that atmosphere is important to me.

I’ve always believed that portrait sessions are more than just a photo shoot; we are freezing time, and keeping a small piece of that newborn magic forever. And if we’re freezing time, we want that time to be calm and families to be able to focus on their emotion and connection with each other.

Optimal Studio Warmth

First up, let’s talk about keeping things toasty. In the studio, we crank up the heat to a snug 80 degrees. It’s warm to all of us, but for baby, it’s the absolute best, and ensures they sleep. It also allows me to more easily achieve those adorable images of baby unswaddled. This kind of perfect, sleepy warmth? It’s a bit of a tough act to follow in most homes (open floor plans are not conducive to heating a small area), and no one wants to turn on the heat in the summer!

Mom’s Turn to Relax

One stumbling block I routinely found with lifestyle sessions was that Mom was always overworked. Someone who had just had a baby was now trying to get the house ready, get baby ready, get siblings ready, AND trying to get their own hair and makeup done. By the time they sat for their portraits, they were done. I know how intense those first few weeks are, and that is not the experience I want for people. At the studio though, I’m able to address some of that. No trying to get the house ready, no trying to get yourself feeling human again. Just bring your baby and your outfit; and give yourself a moment to just sit still while a professional hair and makeup artist does the rest.

Everything You and Baby Could Need

One of my goals when putting my studio together was to make sure that we provided anything that a family would need. I included a changing area is stocked with all the baby essentials: wipes, new pacifiers, diapers, you name it. It’s all about making this experience as smooth as possible for both you and your little one.

I also know how easy it is to miss meals when you’re juggling a newborn. So for all my sessions I always put out a plate of fresh fruit, and pastries, and keep beverages on hand. A little energy boost can make all the difference, and I want you to feel right at home.

Props and Outfits Galore

One of the fun parts of having a studio? I don’t have to limit the props and outfits available to me. My studio allows me to utilize a large collection of props, backdrops, outfits for baby, bonnets, and bows and accessories. And I’m able to custom tailor what we use to your style preferences.

Leave the Clutter Behind

Lastly, a big bonus of coming to the studio is forgetting about any mess at home. No need to tidy up or hide the laundry – come as you are, and step into a space that’s all set up and waiting for you.

Newborn studio photography allows me to create an atmosphere where we are able to capture magic of new beginnings. It’s a place where you can pause, relax, and know that we’re here to make everything perfect for your family’s precious new addition. If you’re ready to capture these fleeting moments in a place that’s all about celebrating this incredible time, I’d love to have you over at the studio.
